#FacialHairFriday; another goatee on the very handsome subject.
This is John Schwinghammer, circa 1870. This is my favorite photograph, not just in my own collection, but in any collection I’ve seen. Aside from being quite handsome, Mr. Schwinghammer proved to be my most successful research project.
I acquired this image in a bulk lot purchase and was very pleased to find that, not only was his name on the back, but there was a photographer’s mark as well. This albumen portrait was made in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. After several weeks of research, following clues and going cross-eyed searching census records, I discovered that Mr. Schwinghammer was born in Bavaria and immigrated with his family to the US in the 1850s. He went on to serve as mayor of Egg Harbor City (which, incidentally, was established as a colony for German immigrants-but that’s another research project) and is buried there.
