Today is the birthday of American astronomer Maria Mitchell, born in 1818. She was born into a Quaker community and received a much better education than most women of her day thanks, in part, to the Quakers’ belief in equality.
In 1847, Mitchell discovered a comet which, at the time, was called Miss Mitchell’s Comet. It is now known by the designation C/1847 T1.
